A Whirlwind of Political Activity Blowing across Tennessee

The legislature just convened on Tuesday, and already it feels like there is a whirlwind of political activity blowing across the state. Here are a few highlights.
- Governor’s Reform Plan: The Governor presented an outline of his education reform proposals that the legislature is set to debate and vote on by Friday. That’s right. Not much time for legislative contemplation and public scrutiny of the final legislative product. Spend a few minutes reading a summary of the Governor’s primary bill regarding K-12 education.
In addition, you might want to watch FACT’s exclusive 3-minute interview with House Majority Leader Jason Mumpower on showing fiscal restraint, counting the true cost of federal dollars, and weighing the Governor’s proposals for higher education.
- Televised Gubernatorial Debate: Today, Thursday, January 14, at 8 p.m. EST (7 p.m. CST), the local CBS affiliates across the state will carry a live debate between all the major Gubernatorial candidates from both parties on the topic of education and economic development.
- Third District Congressional Debate: On Saturday, January 30, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. (EST), all the Republican candidates to replace Congressman Zach Wamp in the Third Congressional District will participate in the LiberTEA Debate Series, sponsored by the Chattanooga TEA Party and the Hamilton County Campaign for Liberty. There will be time to meet with the candidates personally after the debate. The venue for the debate will be Woodland Park Baptist Church, 6735 Standifer Gap Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
