As Americans anticipate the celebration of our nation’s independence from British rule, we would do well to consider the roots of our independence. President Obama’s recent statement in Turkey that Americans don’t consider America to be “a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values” gives us much to worry about. |

There can be little doubt that many of the original colonists who helped settle and establish this nation came here with the desire to practice their Christian faith without interference from the government. Freedom of religion is a foundational tenet in America. It’s even been referred to as the “first liberty,” because it is the liberty to follow the dictates of our conscience as informed by our belief in God. But today this right is often made subservient to other interest. That’s why a bill recently passed by the General Assembly with little fanfare may be one of the most important bills passed this year. |
