Making Your Vote for Marriage Count

One popular campaign tactic these days is to say of a candidate, “He voted for it before he voted against” or vice versa.  It’s pretty effective to point out a double minded person and question the true values of the candidate.  But as we head to the polls, one question that crosses my mind is whether the same will be said of a large number of Tennesseans – will large numbers of Tennesseans vote against what they have already voted for?  The same question can be posed to citizens in 27 other states, “Will they vote against what they have voted for?”

In 2006, an overwhelming 81.3% of Tennessee voters voted in favor of defining marriage as between one man and one woman.  Of the 27 states that have approved state constitutional amendments defining marriage as between one man and one woman, the margin of victory for marriage was second only to another state’s margin of 81.6%.

But ultimately the definition of marriage in Tennessee will be decided not by Tennesseans.  It won’t even be decided by a majority of Americans. In large part, it will be decided by the next President of the United States. Will our vote for President be a vote against what we’ve already voted for?  Click here more…

Tennesseans Give America Something to Think About

Last week, our FAN talked about the issues that counted most as we try to sort through the charges and counter charges made by the various candidates for federal and state office.  A couple of Tennesseans put together an incredible video reminding Christians about the issues that are most important and the power we hold as voters.  You will want to take four minutes to watch it. And because it does not mention any candidates, lawyers for the producers of the video have opined that it complies with the Internal Revenue Code and is suitable for use in churches.

Released last week, it had over a half million hits in the first four days and over 1,000 churches have already downloaded it to show to their congregations.  Perhaps your church will want to download the video and play it.  Nothing more will need to be said. Congratulations to our fellow citizens for a job well done.

Enough With Partisan Politics …Does Political Party Matter?

Most Americans are tired of partisan politics.  And for good reason. It often feels like political parties are only interested wining so they can be in control.  Substance on the issues seems almost secondary (to find out where your state legislative candidates stand, click here).  We say we should vote for the candidate, not the party.  But should we completely disregard a candidate’s party?  Click here for more...
